چکیده

Article history: Received April 17, 2012 Accepted 11 June 2012 Available online June 14 2012 One of the key challenges of nurse scheduling problem (NSP) is the number of constraints placed on preparing the timetable, both from the regulatory requirements as well as the patients’ demand for the appropriate nursing care specialists. In addition, the preferences of the nursing staffs related to their work schedules add another dimension of complexity. Most solutions proposed for solving nurse scheduling involve the use of mathematical programming and generally considers only the hard constraints. However, the psychological needs of the nurses are ignored and this resulted in subsequent interventions by the nursing staffs to remedy any deficiency and often results in last minute changes to the schedule. In this paper, we present a staff preference optimization framework solved with a greedy double swap heuristic. The heuristic yields good performance in speed at solving the problem. The heuristic is simple and we will demonstrate its performance by implementing it on open source spreadsheet software. © 2012 Growing Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A hybrid heuristic algorithm for the no-wait flowshop problem with sequence-dependent setup times

We consider the NP-hard no-wait flowshop scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times to minimize makespan. We propose a hybrid heuristic which combines the iterated greedy process with local search method based on a block swap operator. Experimental results show that the proposed heuristic is comparatively more effective than the existing metaheuristics.

An Iterated Greedy Algorithm for Solving the Blocking Flow Shop Scheduling Problem with Total Flow Time Criteria

In this paper, we propose an iterated greedy algorithm for solving the blocking flow shop scheduling problem with total flow time minimization objective. The steps of this algorithm are designed very efficient. For generating an initial solution, we develop an efficient constructive heuristic by modifying the best known NEH algorithm. Effectiveness of the proposed iterated greedy algorithm is t...

Maximizing the nurses’ preferences in nurse scheduling problem: mathematical modeling and a meta-heuristic algorithm

The nurse scheduling problem (NSP) has received a great amount of attention in recent years. In the NSP, the goal is to assign shifts to the nurses in order to satisfy the hospital’s demand during the planning horizon by considering different objective functions. In this research, we focus on maximizing the nurses’ preferences for working shifts and weekends off by considering several important...

A hybrid genetic algorithm for the open shop scheduling problem

In this paper novel hybrid genetic algorithms for Open--Shop Scheduling Problem (OSSP) are presented. Two greedy heuristics LPT-Task and LPT-Machine are proposed for decoding chromosomes represented by permutations with repetitions. For comparison the standard permutation representation of OSSP instances is used. The algorithms apply also efficient crossover operator LOX and mutation operators ...

An iterated greedy metaheuristic for the blocking job shop scheduling problem

In this paper we consider a job shop scheduling problem with blocking (zero buffer) constraints. Blocking constraints model the absence of buffers, whereas in the traditional job shop scheduling model buffers have infinite capacity. There are two known variants of this problem, namely the blocking job shop scheduling (BJSS) with swap allowed and the BJSS with no-swap. A swap is needed when ther...
